Dear Friends:
Your group is cordially invited to cosponsor the 23rd Annual Peace and Justice Conference. Entitled "Intergenerational Peace and Justice: Saving the Earth for Future Generations", it will be held on Saturday, May 1st from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Stony Run Friends Meeting House, 5116 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218
We are excited to have as keynoter, Colman McCarthy. As you may know, Colman is a journalist, teacher, lecturer, pacifist, a self-proclaimed anarchist and long-time peace activist. From 1969 to 1997, he wrote columns for The Washington Post. His topics ranged from politics, religion, and sports to education, poverty, and peacemaking. The Washingtonian magazine called him "the liberal conscience of The Washington Post." The Smithsonian magazine said he is "a man of profound spiritual awareness." He has written for The New Yorker, The Nation, The Progressive, Atlantic Monthly, and The Readers Digest. Since 1999, he has written bi-weekly columns for The National Catholic Reporter.
As in years past, your group's co-sponsorship can range anywhere from a monetary donation to moral support (i.e., in name only.) Please download the sponsor form for the list of possibilities.
Workshops will deal with intergenerational issues on peace (Peace Alliance/Student Peace Alliance, justice (Voices Together), the environment (grassroots and legislative), and an update on the PATRIOT ACT, among others.
The format will be the same as in past years, a keynote speaker (Colman McCarthy) in the morning, followed by a workshop session. After a delicious vegetarian lunch (with entertainment), we will have the presentation of the Fred Benjamin Peace Awards. Then follows two workshop sessions and a brief closing ceremony. The Annual Business meeting for Maryland United for Peace and Justice
members will end the day with the election of new officers and discussion of any resolutions presented during the day.
We hope that your group will be able to support this important endeavor in any way that it can. It is only with your help that we are able to continue to hold this conference year after year.
For peace with justice,
